Taking Classics course helped me realize that modernity and antiquity are along a continuum and constantly posing similar philosophical questions, similar political quandaries. The Classics faculty at Notre Dame fired my imagination and pushed me to think beyond the present moment into the shape
of knowledge.

I still appreciate the attention of the Classics professors given to me as an undergrad and the enjoyment I had in all of my classes. It truly colored my college experience at Notre Dame, being in the department, having small classes and knowing I was getting something I could take with me into any field. I use the lessons learned through my coursework and reading to better understand all sorts of disparate topics I investigate in my job and in my own continuing education.

The classics, in particular the Latin language, provided a foundation for understanding and synthesizing the various languages and cultures I encountered during my travels throughout Europe. Latin also vastly improved my writing abilities by increasing my awareness of English vocabulary andsyntax. Beyond such immediate applications, though, the Classics offered a deeper grasp of the philosophy that built modern Western civilization, which allowed me to understand the genesis of many of today's most important social functions such as government, law, and medicine.

There’s an intimacy within the Department of Classics because both students and professors share the same appreciation for the Classical civilizations and literature. I feel very lucky to have been a part of it.
I think it one of the greatest blessings of my life to be able to devote my college years to these authors and in the process gain a solid education which will help me for years to come.
The Department of Classics creates an unparalled experience to study some of the most profound and beautiful works ever created by humans under the tutelage of faculty as brilliant as they are friendly.
Although some may dismiss the ancient world as inapplicable to modern society, I am intrigued by its relevance to and expressions in the cultures of western civilization. Classics has allowed me to see the world, and American society, through a number of different lenses.
Classics offers an unparalleled interaction with faculty coupled with an incredible depth and range of subject matter. My ability to think—and write—clearly has grown considerbly from having to master such a wide variety of subjects.
Studying Classics is like working a puzzle with missing pieces. You're able to get most of the picture—and it's beautiful—but you still have to make some guesses to complete the scene. That's the fun part.
