Research Profile

Professor Torrance specializes in archaic and classical Greek literature and culture, especially Greek tragedy and religion. She is also interested in the reception of classical myth in later literature. She is author of Aeschylus: Seven Against Thebes (London 2007), and co-author of a database of oaths in archaic and classical Greek texts published online in 2007 at www.nottingham.ac.uk/classics/oaths. Her second book, The Oath in Archaic and Classical Greece, based on findings of the database, and co-authored with Professor Alan Sommerstein (Nottingham, UK), and four other collaborators, is under contract with De Gruyter. She has also published several articles, book chapters, and book reviews on Greek tragedy and its reception. In her teaching she aims to combine broad understanding of different literary genres, and what they tell us about Greek culture, with close textual examination and critical analysis.
