Summer Language Institute
The Summer Institute gives a range of students the opportunity to study the ancient languages necessary to understanding Greek and Roman, Judaic, Early Christian, Medieval and Byzantine civilizations.
Learning for All Levels
Beginners may take introductory courses in:
- Latin
- Greek
- Hebrew
- Syriac
- Arabic
Intermediate courses are available in:
- Greek
- Latin
- Syriac.
Advanced courses include:
- Medieval Latin
- Latin Paleography
- Syriac literature.
Additional Opportunities
Students may also be able to study one language and take additional courses in history or theology.
Occasionally, the Summer Institute offers classes in Armenian, Christian Arabic, Coptic, or Ethiopic.
Special Studies
Special Studies courses are offered for variable credit.
Students may register for up to six credits of Special Studies courses in:
- Beginning and intermediate Greek
- Latin
- Hebrew
- Arabic
Student work takes place entirely within the beginning or intermediate course offered for three credits. The title of the Special Studies course registration can be changed at the end of the summer term to allow the title of the course actually completed to appear on the Notre Dame transcript.
