Summer Language Institute         FAQ

Why is the Institute held during the summer?

The best way to acquire new language skills is through intensive, highly focused learning. The Institute’s intensive summer courses offer a unique opportunity for this kind of learning.

Why is the Institute held in South Bend, IN?

South Bend’s climate in the summer is usually quite temperate. The University campus is not crowded and comfortable, almost park-like in the summer.  On-campus housing and food service are convenient, readily available, and comparatively inexpensive. In short, the summer program at Notre Dame offers the ideal circumstances for highly concentrated work in pleasant surroundings.

In addition, Notre Dame’s Library has special strengths in Biblical Studies, Early Christian Literature, in Medieval Studies, and, with the recently acquired Anastos Collection, in Byzantine Studies. Thus students in these fields who come to Notre Dame for summer language work find a valuable opportunity for their personal growth through interaction with these resources.

How can I benefit from the Institute?

The Summer Institute in Ancient and Medieval Languages can introduce anyone to any one of the ancient languages, but it is felt that it provides a most effective and satisfying experience for those about to engage in or already engaged in the study of Antiquity and the Middle Ages, especially in their religious dimensions. Those contemplating a graduate career in Biblical Studies, Classics, Early Christian Studies, Medieval Studies, and Byzantine Studies would be particularly well served by the firm philological foundation offered and by the lively atmosphere of the community studying the ancient and medieval worlds.
