Submission Deadline for UGA Classics Undergraduate Research Conference

People and Places: Identity in the Classical World

Third Annual Classics Undergraduate Research Conference at the University of Georgia

Pindar is perhaps most well-known for his epinician poetry. At the commission of victors of athletic contests, including some of the wealthiest and most powerful individuals in the Greek world, Pindar composed works which not only honored the laudandus, but also the polis and region from which that dedicatee hailed. His work was intimately involved in the mythological ethos of diverse regions and how those mythologies connected to the “Greek” nomoi at large. This conference will be centered around the concepts of identity and how it was articulated in the ancient world; though Pindar was a Greek poet, we will be exploring identity throughout Classical antiquity, diachronically and at its fullest geographic expanse. We invite all undergraduates who have performed research using any methodology which incorporates this substantial topic of such complexity and importance to come and join us in what will be an engaging and intellectually stimulating discussion with scholars and fellow students of the ancient world. This conference will serve not only to give undergraduates experience in presenting in academic environments, but will also be an excellent opportunity to interact and establish connections with others who share similar research interests.

The Zeta Iota (University of Georgia) chapter of Eta Sigma Phi will be hosting the conference on March 24th, 2018 in room 265 of Park Hall. Food and beverages will be provided, as will tours of the University’s gorgeous campus.

The keynote address will be delivered by Dr. Virginia Lewis from Florida State University and will focus on myth, locality, and identity in the corpus of Pindar.

Please submit a short abstract of your paper (no more than 500 words) in PDF format to michael.sloman25@uga.edu by January 5, 2018. Each student presentation will be 15-20 minutes in length, with time reserved afterwards to address any questions which may arise. Decisions about which papers will be accepted for the conference will be reached by January 20, 2018 and all will be notified whether or not their work has been accepted shortly thereafter.

Please do not hesitate to contact Michael Sloman, Eta Sigma Phi-Zeta Iota President, at michael.sloman25@uga.edu if you have any questions.
