Program: MA in Classics

Area(s) of Interest: Epigraphy; marginalized groups in Roman society (esp. women and freedmen); intersection of material culture and literature

Maddie Hoaglund graduated from Washington and Lee University in 2021 with a double major in Classics and Religion. She received the White Scholarship in Greek and the CAMWS Latin award for outstanding achievement in ancient languages from the Department of Classics. She was a W&L Scholar and all academic varsity athlete in track and cross country throughout her four years at Washington and Lee.

Maddie’s primary research interests include epigraphy, marginalized Roman populations, specifically women and freedmen, and material culture. Her undergraduate thesis, entitled “Remnants of Feminine Power: An examination of Ankara Epigraphy,” examined inscriptions in the Galatian capital city of Ancyra over a period of six hundred years. Through epigraphy, she studies marginalized populations and the intersection between material culture and literature. After completing her M.A. in Classics at Notre Dame, Maddie intends to pursue a PhD with an aim to teach at the university level.
