Renaissance Humanism and Iberia’s Global Empires
Stuart M. McManus
Stevanovich Institute on the Formation of Knowledge and Department of Classics, University of Chicago
Dr. McManus (M.A. Warburg Institute, Ph.D. Harvard) works on the global history of empires with a focus on Latin America and Iberian Asia, who has published widely on the cultural history of Latin America, ethnohistory and the classical tradition. He argues that the classical rhetorical tradition was a key technology of empire and evangelization in the early modern Americas, Africa and Asia, and can best be understood from a global perspective.
