How to apply

The M.A. in Classics designed for Notre Dame Ph.D. students does not require a standard process of application. By the end of the second year in the student’s Ph.D. program (but ideally before), they are simply required to:

• Communicate their intent to pursue the M.A. in Classics to the DGS of their home department and the DGS of the M.A. in Classics.

• Fill out a “Plan of Study” to be approved by the DGS of their home Department, the DGS of the M.A. in Classics, and the Graduate School. Ask the administrative coordinator of Classics for a copy of this “Plan”. The “Plan of Study” should include the required five advanced Greek and/or Latin courses offered by the Department of Classics (for a minimum of 15 credits) and the seven disciplinary courses (for a maximum of 21 credits). If the student is taking (planning to earn) more than one master’s degree, they should declare which classes they are double-counting; they cannot double-count more than six credits toward two master's programs.

• Ask the administrative coordinator of Classics to initiate the registrar’s curriculum change form so that the student can approve it and add the M.A. in Classics to their curriculum.

• After completing the required courses listed in the “Plan of Study”, the student will inform the DGS of their department and the DGS of the M.A. in Classics that they have completed all the degree requirements and would like to be added to the official graduation list. Students do not have to wait until the end of the Ph.D. program to earn the M.A. in Classics degree!
