Latin Placement Exam

Please follow these instructions to take our online Latin placement exam.

Major in Classics

30 credits (10 courses) are required:

• 15 credits – 5 courses in either Greek (CLGR) or Latin (CLLA)—3rd semester level (200XX) and above

• 6 credits – 2 courses in non-primary language (Greek or Latin)

• 3 credits – 1 course in Greek or Roman history

• 6 credits – 2 elective Classics courses in CLAS, CLLA, or CLGR

Supplementary Major in Classics

24 credits (8 courses) are required:

• 15 credits – 5 courses in either Greek (CLGR) or Latin (CLLA)—3rd semester level (200XX) and above

• 3 credits – 1 course in Greek or Roman History

• 6 credits – 2 elective Classics courses in CLAS, CLLA, or CLGR

Minor in Latin

15 credits, or 5 courses, at the Intermediate level (CLLA 200XX) or higher are required to complete a minor in Latin.

Minor in Greek

15 credits, or 5 courses, at the Intermediate level (CLGR 200XX) or higher are required to complete a minor in Greek.

Classical Civilization

Major in Greek and Roman Civilization

30 credits (10 courses) are required:

• 3 credits – 1 course in History of Ancient Greece

• 3 credits – 1 course in History of Ancient Rome

• 3 credits – 1 course in ancient archaeology

• 3 credits – 1 course in ancient literature

• 18 credits – 6 elective Classics courses in CLAS, CLLA, CLGR

Although not required, most students include some language study in their 6 elective courses.

Supplemental Major in Greek and Roman Civilization

24 credits (8 courses) are required:

• 3 credits – 1 course in History of Ancient Greece

• 3 credits – 1 course in History of Ancient Rome

• 3 credits – 1 course in ancient archeology

• 3 credits – 1 course in ancient literature

• 12 credits – 4 elective Classics courses in CLAS, CLLA, CLGR

Minor in Greek and Roman Civilization

15 credits (5 courses) are required to complete the Minor in Classical Studies: Civilization.

• 3 credits – 1 course in Greek History

• 3 credits – 1 course in Roman History

• 3 credits – 1 course in ancient archeology

• 6 credits – 2 elective Classics courses in CLAS, CLLA, CLGR

Minor in Classical Heritage

15 credits, or five courses, are required to complete the minor in Classical Studies: Heritage.

• 3 credits – 1 course with a chiefly historical orientation

• 3 credits – 1 course with a chiefly literary orientation

• 9 credits – 3 other courses approved by the Director of Undergraduate Studies (may include CLAS, CLLA, CLGR, as well as courses from other units)
